Eduardo was having difficulty with his English and discipline problems at school. When we started home visits, he wanted to play video games instead of working with me. After a month and a half of home visits and doing PACT activities, Eduardo has shown much improvement. He now easily speaks English (his attendance in school has helped greatly with this) and he is excited to work with me. He eagerly engages in the activities each week. Mom has noticed improvements not only in English but in his behavior at school as well.
When I began home visits with three-year-old Raul, I could not understand his speech or make out any words he said in Spanish or in English. Marta, his mother, wanted him to improve his socialization skills as well as to say his name when asked. After two months of home visits and PACT activities, I now understand several words that Raul says. Raul readily engages in activities that I bring and is comfortable interacting with me. When I say his name, he looks up at me and responds. He still makes up names for himself like “Spiderman” or “King” but I feel that he is aware that he has one name that others call him. Raul was able to put together a puzzle of 26 pieces with little help, which amazed both his sister and me.
Juana is twenty-two years old and a mother of three (two boys and one baby girl). Several years ago, Juana dropped out of high school while in the ninth grade. When I signed Juana up for Project MAX, she indicated in her Family Goals and Objectives that she wanted to pursue obtaining her GED. So, after testing with TABE, I began to provide pre-GED instruction for Juana in her home. She also registered for GED classes at the Danville Area Community College. Although she was pregnant at the time and had transportation difficulties, Juana missed very few classes. Her long-term goal is to pursue a job in a non-traditional field such as auto mechanics.
