Cobden, Illinois
Activities
Project MAX families participated in Public Broadcasting System (PBS) workshops held at the Union/Jackson Farm Labor Camp. The location of these workshops helped them to be successful because many families live either in this camp or nearby. The camp is close to those who live in the town of Cobden as well as in Alto Pass and Anna. At these particular workshops, parents read books to their children and then they created projects together that were related to the stories.
A popular activity for families during a home visit is to work with the “Magic Desk”. The Home Visitor uses the initials of the children’s name as a vehicle for creating more words. Parents and children think of other words that start with the same letters and write them on the desk. A letter becomes the “letter of the week” so that the family can be thinking of more words during the week to report for the next home visit.
Games are also popular with families. Home Visitors look for games that complement that week’s lesson. Families really like games that reflect something about their daily life. For example, the game Life provides an opportunity for using lots of language in an informal setting. This seems to be especially important for parents because they are more relaxed and more willing to participate.
