Intergenerational Literacy Activities
The purpose of this component is to increase the involvement of parents in their children’s learning and literacy through parent/child together (PACT) time. Home visits are an important aspect of the intergenerational literacy activities with the purpose of advancing the instructional goals of the MEES program. The home visit is an opportunity for parents and children to learn and play together. Weekly visits are planned by the Home Visitor to build on the child's strengths and preferences.  The Home Visitor also helps families connect to their child's school and community resources.
The WINGS Learning System is used as the basis for activities and targets the skills necessary for a successful school experience. In addition, materials such as developmentally appropriate toys, may be left with a family and then collected when the home visitor returns the following week.
MEES staff also assist school age children with homework and model for parents how they themselves can help their children with school work. Laptop computers installed with age appropriate software are utilized as another way for parents and children to interact.
