Success Stories
Julio Orta has been in the Bright Beginnings program since it began and showed a high interest in books and reading. Before Kindergarten, he was able to identify letters and letter sounds in English and Spanish. He showed great interest in speaking and reading in both languages. Various literacy activities using bilingual materials were completed during the PACT home visits to help cultivate his early literacy skills.
During Kindergarten, he was able to read many books in English and Spanish. He never confused the two languages or their different pronunciations while reading. He continued to show advance reading, writing, and spelling skills throughout his First grade year. His advanced literacy skills earned him a nomination by his teacher for the Gifted and Talented Program in Texas. This is a special program for intelligent students. Its purpose is to provide extra materials, activities, and projects for students so they can continue to develop their skills if their classroom work is not challenging enough.
It is a great accomplishment to be nominated, especially at such a young age. When his mother received the nomination letter she stated that the Bright Beginnings program had a definite impact on his good grades and achievements, and that they were very proud and pleased with his school success. She has also played an important role by learning the English skills necessary to communicate with his teachers and to be active in helping with his assignments.
