Mendota, Illinois
Mendota (population 7,272) is located in north-central Illinois in northwestern La Salle County. Residents of Mendota have the benefit of learning about their own history at three local museums: Hume-Carnegie Museum, Union Depot Railroad Museum, and Breaking the Prairie Agricultural Museum. These important resources provide information on the cultural, economic and agricultural histories of the Mendota area. Appreciation for the local heritage is expressed each August in the “Mendota Sweet Corn Festival”, which brings residents together to enjoy entertainment and locally prepared foods.
Mendota enjoys close access to Buffalo Rock, Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks. These parks offer some of the finest hiking, camping and fishing in the state. Among the more unique attractions at the Buffalo Rock State Park are the earthen sculptures of a snake, turtle, catfish, frog and water strider, all of which were inspired by Native American burial grounds.
Migrant workers come to the Mendota area each year to detassel and process corn and to plant, cultivate, harvest and process peas for Del Monte and other growers. Other workers find employment in mushroom harvesting in nearby Princeton.
