| Prior to working with Project
MAX, Juana worked in the Migrant Education Program
at Cobden Unit School District #17 as a teacher’s
aide. She started working in Migrant Education
in 1980 when her own children were still in school.
Her position at the school gave Juana the opportunity
to be involved in her children’s activities.
Juana continues to work for the Migrant Education
Program in addition to her work with Illinois MEES. |
| Juana was born in La Grulla,
Texas, but grew up in Mexico. When Juana was young,
she worked in the agricultural fields and traveled
from one state to another along with her father
and brother. She experienced first hand that being
a migrant farmworker is not easy. |
| Juana received her elementary
education in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico. She obtained
a G.E.D in McAllen, Texas in 1985. She then took
English classes through the Illinois Migrant Council
and also with Shawnee Community College. In 1995
she received a C.D.A. (Child Development Associate).
She also earned an Associate of Applied Science
in Early Childhood in 1997 and an Associate of
Arts in 2000 from Shawnee Community College. Juana
was recognized in 2000 from The Little Egypt Of
Illinois Association for Education of Young Children
as a special community member committed to early
childhood issues. |
| Juana enjoys being around children
and working with migrant families. She believes
that education is very important in order to succeed
in life and that if we prepare our children during
their early years with a good education, they can
become successful in any field they choose, and
have a better life. During her free time, she loves
to read and find new activities to do with children. |
