Mary Jo Escatel
Family Education Specialist
As a Family Education Specialist, Mary Jo is responsible for:
Facilitating and providing family literacy services to migrant families;
Supervising local home visits;
Providing training and technical support to home visitors;
Identifying families eligible for Project MAX, and
Facilitating the delivery of educational services to families.
Prior to working with Bright Beginnings, Mary Jo was a Community Health Worker with the Community Health Partnership of Illinois. She performed outreach and family health risk assessment; provided bilingual health education; and, was responsible for billing, answering phones, and determining eligibility.
Mary Jo is bilingual in English and Spanish. This is an asset in her position with Illinois MEES. In addition, she completed a course of studies in Nursing Assistant and received a diploma with highest honors. In recognition of her work in advocating for migrant farmworkers, Mary Jo received a certificate from the Illinois Association of Agencies and Community Organizations for Migrant Advocacy (IAACOMA) in April 2003.
Mary Jo has a strong interest in working in her community and especially with the Latino population. Her volunteer experience with the Illinois Valley Hispanic Partnership Council has been an advantage in her work with the families in Bright Beginnings. During Mary Jo’s free time, she loves to read and find new activities to do with children.
